Montana State quarterback Tommy Mellott won the Walter Payton Award as the Football Championship Subdivision offensive player of the year Saturday night, two days before the top-ranked Bobcats face North Dakota State in the title game.

A panel of 52 voters selected MSU’s Tommy Mellot as the winner of the Walter Payton Award, which goes to the best offensive player in the FCS. NDSU’s Cam Miller finished second.
