The new sheriff's office policy has drawn concern that vulnerable individuals will be left without critical support.

The Sacramento County Sheriff announced Tuesday his deputies will no longer respond to mental health calls where a crime is not being committed.

The County Sheriff's Office is now turning away some calls for help, and mental health advocates and even firefighters are protesting the policy change.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said it won’t be responding to mental health crisis calls where no crime is being committed, instead that responsibility will go to the fire department.
