Washington, D.C., played host to a grand military parade celebrating the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday—a ceremony that coincided with President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday and Flag Day. The event unfolded along Constitution Avenue from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument and closed with a fireworks show over the Tidal Basin.

Trump and other officials watched the procession of soldiers and armored vehicles from a reviewing stand, but many people on the ground in Washington did not witness any of the show of force. Instead, they were treated to vivid demonstrations of the tensions inspired by Trump’s administration.

Coinciding with Trump's 79th birthday, the parade will feature tanks, bands and thousands of troops in honor of the Army’s 250th anniversary celebration.

The power of the US military will be sharply on display this weekend – on two different coasts and in two very different ways.

While many demonstrations against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency have been peaceful, with marchers chanting slogans and carrying signs, others have led to clashes with police who have sometimes used chemical irritants to disperse crowds. Hundreds have been arrested.
