The suspect in the Washington, D.C., shooting that critically wounded two National Guard members was an Afghan national who served alongside U.S. troops in Afghanistan, officials and a relative say.

Mourners gathered at a West Virginia high school this weekend remembered a National Guard member fatally shot last week as a caring and positive person who wanted to help others.

Beckstrom, along with Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, was shot by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, on Wednesday in what’s been called an “ambush-style” attack.
