Donald Trump has urged the U.S. Supreme Court to pause a federal TikTok law that would ban the popular social media app or force its sale, with the Republican U.S. President-elect arguing that he should have time after taking office to pursue a "political resolution" to the issue.

Groups filed briefs with the Supreme Court against the TikTok divest-or-ban law, arguing it violates the First Amendment, and in favor of it.

The president-elect took no position on the app’s First Amendment challenge to the law, which sets a Jan. 19 deadline to sell or close the popular platform.

The president-elect said that pushing back a potential ban on TikTok would give him time to negotiate a way to “save the platform.”

Trump asked the Supreme Court to delay the ban past the Jan. 19 deadline so that his incoming administration can make a deal.
