At least 80 miners became trapped in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, with rescue efforts underway and no injuries or deaths reported, according to government officials.

The Dominican Republic is on the northern edge of the Caribbean tectonic plate, bordering the North American one. This boundary is known for producing seismic activity, with a long history of earthquakes, including Samaná's 8.1 magnitude in 1946 and the 6.4 magnitude in 2020 near Puerto Rico.

The Dominican government, via the Ministry of Finance and Economy, successfully issued US$1.6 billion in sovereign bonds on international markets with a 10-year maturity and a yield of 5.875%, fully covering its external financing needs for fiscal year 2025.
