European nations are working with Ukraine on a new proposal for a ceasefire in the war with Russia along current battle lines, four European diplomats say. The plan mainly incorporates ideas already under discussion while pressing to keep the US in a central role.

European leaders, including from Britain, France, Germany and the European Union, have issued a joint statement with Ukraine backing US President Donald Trump's call for a ceasefire at present battle lines.

Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky warned the UN last month that AI was contributing to "the most destructive arms race in human history". He called for global rules for the use of AI in weapons, and said the issue was "just as urgent as preventing the spread of nuclear weapons".

The barrage came hours after President Trump said he was putting off a planned meeting with President Vladimir Putin of Russia to avoid a “wasted” effort toward ending the war.
