Starting in July, the federal agency will start withholding 50% of a person’s check if they’ve received an overpayment of their benefits. The withholding, officially part of what’s known as the Treasury Offset Program, will remain until the extra benefits are repaid.

Regular Social Security retirement benefits for the month of July will be sent out on the SSA’s usual schedule: Wednesday, July 9: Birth dates between the first and 10th of the month. Wednesday, July 16: Birth dates between the 11th and 20th of the month. Wednesday, July 23: Birth dates between the 21st and 31st of the month.

The Social Security Administration will be cutting some American’s checks in half starting later this month to recoup nearly $72 billion in improper payments. People who have received more Social Security benefits than needed can expect their monthly payments to be cut in half by around July 24 until the overpayment is repaid.
