EDMONTON -- Mikko Rantanen had a goal and an assist in his Dallas Stars debut, but the Edmonton Oilers hung on for a 5-4 win at Rogers Place on Saturday. The forward was traded to Dallas by the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday, and then signed an eight-year, $96 million contract.

As reported by TSN’s Ryan Rishaug, the Oilers made a huge push to trade for Rantanen. They were also reportedly willing to sign him to an extension bigger than the eight-year, $96 million deal he ended up inking with the Stars.
NHL Network analyst Brian Lawton said on Oilers Now today that the Oilers were "aggressively" pursuing Mikko Rantanen in conversations with the Carolina Hurricanes before the star winger was sent to Dallas.
Moving aside from the potential Rantanen signing itself, I want to focus on the fact that the Edmonton Oilers were prepared to sign a top end pending free agent and were willing to use 12.5+ million in cap space to do so.
