As we watch the devastating progression of the wildfires in Los Angeles, a new FRONTLINE documentary is looking back to 2023, when the Hawaiian town of Lahaina experienced the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century.

According to a blog from the University of Hawai'i Economic Research Organization, about 430 to 510 Valley Isle residents moved out of state after the disaster.

While data predicted that Maui residents would leave after the blazes, many residents that were living in Maui during the fires did not leave the island.
