SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Democratic moderate candidate Daniel Lurie, a philanthropist and heir to the Levi Strauss fortune, was elected mayor of San Francisco, local media projected on Thursday as the incumbent Mayor London Breed conceded.

Levi Strauss heir and philanthropist Daniel Lurie says he will make streets safer, help small businesses and squash the open-air drug markets that have tarnished San Francisco’s image in recent years.

Mayor London Breed acknowledged on Thursday that Daniel Lurie, a first-time candidate, would succeed her in office.

San Francisco’s mayor is the latest casualty of the 2024 anti-incumbent election cycle, losing her seat to a political novice after just one term. Democrat London Breed had been a member of the city’s Board of Supervisors since 2012 when she became the first Black woman to lead the city in 2018.

Like Goldman – a former Manhattan federal prosecutor – Lurie was elected without any prior experience holding public office. The two men are related through Lurie’s stepfather, Peter Haas, and Goldman’s grandmother, Rhoda Haas Goldman, who were siblings.

Daniel Lurie, a local nonprofit founder and an heir to the Levi Strauss & Co. fortune, will become San Francisco’s 46th mayor. He unseated incumbent Mayor London Breed, a fellow moderate Democrat, during Tuesday’s general election in the 14th round of ranked-choice voting.

Lurie beat out 14 other candidates, including Breed and former interim Mayor Mark Farrell, as well as supervisors Aaron Peskin and Ahsha Safai.

Levi Strauss heir Daniel Lurie, who has never held public office, promised Friday that as San Francisco's mayor he will do what seasoned politicians before him have not -- clean up city streets and bring an end to its open-air drug markets.
