Most recently, the Hobart Hockey team won back-to-back national championships in 2023 and 2024. HWS has nearly 700 All-Americans. At Hobart and William Smith, we know what it’s like to go up against giants. And win. We’ve taken on some of the biggest names in academia and sports and come out on top. Our Debate team is a perfect example.

Originally known as the Hobart Deacons, Hobart's athletic teams became known as the "Statesmen" in 1936, following the football team's season opener against Amherst College. The morning after the game, The New York Times referred to the team as "the statesmen from Geneva," and the name stuck.

Oct 24, 2024 · Hobart’s absence from the NCAA postseason has extended farther than any Statesman would like, there is a strong playoff history with Hobart football. Between 2011 and 2016, Hobart qualified for the NCAA playoffs five times, twice advancing to the quarterfinal round.
