In Boat Race Japan, starting from the innermost lane (Lane 1) is often considered to be a strong advantage. However, during the preliminary races, racers don’t always get to start from their preferred lane. Instead, boat numbers (and therefore starting lanes) are rotated fairly evenly to keep things balanced.
