On May 24th, 1962, the Aurora 7 space capsule, with astronaut Scott Carpenter and his Navitimer Cosmonaute aboard, splashed down safely in the Atlantic. The recovery operation lasted three hours, with the long exposure to seawater resulting in damage to Carpenter’s Cosmonaute.
